What is Biomicrotechnology?

Biomicrotechnology links technological developments and biomedicine towards the integration of new microsystems devices into tools for biological and medical research, opening new venues for the investigation of biological networks and the interaction with them.

Our interest in the spatio-temporal activity dynamics of neuronal networks, their computational properties and their pathology requires advanced techniques to monitor the functional properties of such networks. Starting from this, Biomicrotechnology supports the integration of new devices into robust research technologies, the optimization of the usability of such systems and the identification of new applications for microsystems in biomedicine. We thus link biomedicine and microsystems technology in a top-down approach.

Our Research Objectives

  • Understand what controls the spatio-temporal activity dynamics and computational properties of neuronal networks and how they are implemented;
  • Develop new techniques to investigate and interact with excitable networks on an ensemble level;
  • Adapt the techniques developed and principles recognized from this work for biomedical applications;
  • Understand the fundamentals of neurotechnological hybrid systems.

This motivates our contributions in the following projects. For details: more
