FAQs

About The Programme

Q: What is the language of instruction?

A: All compulsory courses are taught in English. As for the elective courses, you may choose between courses taught in English and those taught in German.

Application Documents

Q: What is an authenticated/notarized copy?

A: If you take a photocopy of an official document, it needs to be stamped by an authorized institution who will confirm that the photocopy is identical with the original document; this can be done by the university (in case of university degrees and certificates), by a public notary or by the German Embassy.

Q: What is the required TOEFL \ IELTS score?

A: The minimum required scores are:

  • Internet-based TOEFL: 92
  • Computer-based TOEFL: 237
  • Paper-based TOEFL: 580
  • IELTS: 6.5

Q: I did all my education in English. Do I need to submit a TOEFL/IELTS score?

A: Yes. Only native speakers (i.e those whose mother tongue is English) are exempted.

Q: Who do I ask for a recommendation letter?

A: A recommendation letter should be issued by a university professor who knows you from your Bachelor studies and who is able to evaluate your academic potential. Recommendation letters written by employers are of limited helpfulness. Their content must allow the admission committee to evaluate your potential for academic and professional development.

Q: What is a personal Statement of Intent?

A: A Statement of Intent (also called Statement of Purpose or Letter of Motivation) is a statement written by the applicant in which he or she explains his or her motivation for the field of study and for the programme he/she is applying for. This document is usually one or two pages long, with a maximum length of two pages.

Q: How do I submit the recommendation letter?

A: You need to submit the original version of your recommendation letter using the letterhead of the university. The letter must be in a sealed envelope that has been signed and stamped by the referee. Alternatively, you may submit a notarized copy of the original recommendation letter.

Q: I do not have my Bachelor's degree yet, can I apply?

A: Yes, you can. Just send a preliminary transcript of records showing all the courses you have taken so far and all the marks obtained. The final Bachelor’s degree has to be submitted at the moment of enrolling at the University of Freiburg.

Q: Do I need to know German?

A: German proficiency is not a pre-requisite for the Master's in Microsystems Engineering, because the language of instruction is English. However, it is strongly recommended to have a basic knowledge of the German language before coming to Germany, since you will need to speak German in order to communicate outside of the university.

Q: Why do I need to send my documents by post?

A:Original versions or certified copies of all official documents (university certificates and degrees, language scores, recommendation letters) are required in order to verify the authenticity of the documents.

Q: Do I need to send evidence of how I intend to finance my studies?

A: No, that is not necessary. You only need to submit this evidence to the German Embassy when applying for the visa.

Q: Do I need to send my secondary school certificates?

A: No

Q: Do I need to send a copy of my passport?

A: No

Eligibity

Q: I have a 3 years Bachelor's degree from India or Pakistan, am I eligible?

A: Unfortunately, your Bachelor's degree does not qualify you for a Master's programme in Germany. To be eligible, you need to hold a 4 years Bachelor's degree. You may also apply if you hold a 3 year degree AND either a postgraduate diploma or Master's degree (1 year)

Q: What are the normal base entering averages for admission into the program if my previous studies were in India?

A: Normally, a minimum average of around 70% from your previous studies in India is required for acceptance into this program.
