ARTIC project officially started

The EU STREP project ARTIC ("Artificial Cilia") within the framework of the initiatve "Using nature as model for new nanotechnology-based processes" official started on Dec. 18 with a kick off meeting at the Philips High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, NL. The project is directed towards the movement of liquids in microdevices with the help of artificial cilia constructed from nanoparticle-filled polymer microstructures. The research consortium is headed by Phillips Research (NL) and further participants are Liquids Research Ltd. (UK), university groups from the UK, the Netherlands and Romania and the Laboratory of Chemistry and Physics of Interfaces (CPI) at IMTEK.

CPI is leading a workpackage that deals with the development of materials and synthetic strategies needed to generate the artificial cilia structures.

Earlier in 2006 the proposal for this project ranked No. 1 out of 366 proposals submitted to the European Union.
