Plasma process run on contact lenses

The Plasma Technology Group works on the deposition of amorphous hydrocarbon-based films in the nanometer range.

The polymerization process runs at 15 kHz and is enhanced by a permanent magnetic field. This special configuration allows to run a process continuously for many weeks without any reactor clean procedure.

By choosing the right set of process parameters, the coatings drastically reduce the adhesion of bacteria and proteins on the coated samples.

The aim of these coatings is to impart biocompatibility to substrates of various shape and size and from different materials. On-going investigations include the coating of implantable sensors, biosensors and contact lenses.
