Travel
Access by air
Due to its location in the trinational upper Rhine valley, in a close vicinity to France and Switzerland, Freiburg has excellent connections to international and European traffic. You may choose from the following options:
The best international connections for commercial aviation
are through the Frankfurt
Rhein-Main Airport. There are hourly direct high-speed
train (ICE) connections from the Frankfurt airport terminal
to Freiburg. Detailed train schedules are available
under Die
Bahn. The travel time by train is about 2:15.
You may also travel via the Zurich
Airport in Switzerland. This airport does also have
an hourly train connection to Freiburg. The travel time
by train is about 2:00. Detailed train schedules are
also available under Die
Bahn. On the train you will pass the Swiss-German
border in Basel. There might be a customs control on
the train.
The closest commercial airport is the bi-national Basel
/ Mulhouse Euro Airport, close to the French/Swiss
border near Basel. This airport is accessed by low-budget
German airlines and is primarily interesting for European
and German travellers. A bus shuttle service connects
the Euro Airport to Freiburg main station. Travel time
by bus is approximately 1:00. You will find a bus schedule
under Freiburger
Reisedienst.
You can also fly to the Stuttgart
Airport in Germany (the train connection to Freiburg
takes about 3:00) or the Strasbourg
Airport in France (train connection about 2:00).
Finally, if you own a glider, parasail, hot air balloon,
helicopter or small powered airplane, you can fly directly
into the small non-commercial Freiburg
Airport, adjacent to the IMTEK’s university
campus. However, we do strictly advise you that parachuting
directly into the university campus is discouraged.
Access by car
Freiburg is accessible via the autobahn A5, about halfway between Karlsruhe and Basel. Leave the autobahn at the exit »Freiburg Mitte« and follow the directions towards Freiburg on the route B31. In town, leave the B31 at the exit to the main station (»Hauptbahnhof«). After crossing the bridge over the B31, you will soon see the Congress and Convention Center (»Konzerthaus«) on the right-hand side.
Underground parking (subject to fees) is available a few meters down the road in two basement garages »Konzerthaus« or »Hauptbahnhoflraquo; which share the same entrance.
When you arrive via the route B31 through the black forest, follow the signs to main station (»Hauptbahnhof«) and proceed in the same way as described above.

Access by train
Freiburg is well connected to the German and European
railway system via high-speed train (ICE) connections.
