From bio-SPM to Hybrid bio-MEMS

During my PhD at the Institute of Microtechnology of the University of Neuchâtel in Switzerland, I microfabricated scanning probe microscope (SPM) cantilevers for the electrochemical current measurement trough membrane protein crystals. I continued my journey in SPM with the Swiss instrument manufacturer Nanosurf AG, where I could initiate and co-develop a bio SPM instrument. Thereafter I slightly changed my topic while working as scientist at the Ecole Polytechnique Federal de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland. There, my research was focused on the study of hydrophobic interactions for the in-liquid self-assembly of MEMS. During this study I could build a homemade holographic optical tweezers system capable of manipulating MEMS in 3D as well as study their hydrophobic interaction. Moreover I co-directed several PhD students and participated in fund hunting and project management activities. As follow-up I was awarded a Marie-Curie Fellowship (FP7) which enables me to continue my scientific endeavors. I will concentrate my research on the assembly of hybrid bio-MEMS supported by optical tweezers.
