Project description

AURIS is a research project aiming to develop an autonomous risk and information system for structural analysis and health monitoring of security-relevant buildings. Traffic routes, the energy sector, stadiums or computing centers are vital elements of today's society. Hence, they belong to the critical infrastructures that require particular protection. This applies not only to potential catastrophes but also to the structural condition of a building under normal load. An aging building responds differently to a sudden change in loads than a newly constructed building. The background of the project is the sometimes substantial deterioration of the structural condition caused in particular by aging (corrosion, wear and tear) and load exposure (fatigue and damage due to changing loads from e.g. traffic, winds, temperature, exceeding service load or design loads) previously ignored in connection with the safety of the building. A reliable prognosis about the actual structural capacity reserves of a building both in standard operation as well as in the event of damage requires constantly available, updated data from the monitoring of the building and its real-time analysis. The aim of AURIS is to develop and conduct a long-term trial of an innovative building/structure safety management system intended to provide protection for people in critical infrastructure. This safety management system consists essentially of a measuring system to monitor the structure of the building and assess the actual condition of the building during its entire service life as well as during exceptional load impacts, e.g. during an explosion, accident or earthquake. Computer analysis of the data automatically collected by the system is conducted to establish the remaining structural capacity of the building; this data will provide information to safety and rescue teams about the actual condition on-site and the structural stability of the building. In addition, owners and operators of buildings or structures can obtain updated information on the condition of their buildings during operation. Data can be collected with energy self-sufficient radio sensors. Existing detection systems can also be integrated into the system. The long-term trial of the measuring system will be conducted in an exemplary piece of structural engineering, e.g. in a train station, airport, or office building.
