F-MFC2: Economic evaluation of the filtrating microbial fuel cell – Simultaneous electricity generation and membrane filtration for energy efficient waste water treatment


Project description

Already in a previous project F-MFC we have demonstrated, that an electrically conductive filtration membrane can simultaneously be used as anode of a microbial fuel cell. This way, a part of the electricity required to treat waste water in a membrane bioreactor can be generated from the organic fraction of the waste water itself. Overall aim of the project is to demonstrate the economic viability of this our new concept. Besides operation of the filtrating anode with realistic wastewater this includes the development and optimization of cost-efficient electrically conductive filtration membranes which can be used as microbial fuel cell anodes.
