MEMONO – Metabolic Monitoring in an Organ-on-chip-System

Project description

The 3-dimensional replication of heterogeneous tumors in vitro is of great importance for the research on, e.g. cell-cell interactions, signal pathways and cell metabolism. Particularly, the use of cancer stem cells allows the study of tumor growth and resistance to therapy. We develop a new generation of organ-on-chip systems, which combines organoid culture with integrated monitoring by microsensors. In this way, organotypic functions in miniaturized tumors can be replicated on a chip, including a directed nutrient and drug supply. The metabolic state of the cells, e.g. as an indicator for intercellular communication, can be monitored at the same time in situ with microsensors. We expect that this type of organ-on-chip system will allow novel investigations, first in basic, then in clinical cancer research.
