Courses during summer term

Lasers

Lecture + Excercises

Performing lecturer: Ingo Breunig

Lasers offer engineers a versatile and powerful technology that enhances and revolutionizes a wide range of fields such as manufacturing, communications, sensing or biomedical engineering.

In this course, we teach how to generate laser light in various configurations and how to manipulate it. Furthermore, we discuss which type of laser is best for which application.

Optical Measurement Techniques

Seminar

Performing lecturer: Karsten Buse

For seminar presentations, topics from the field of optical measurement techniques will be offered. Individually supervised and supported by tutorials on professional literature research and the presentation of excellent lectures, the topic will be elaborated and presented in the seminar. Following the presentation, there will be a discussion of the content and an analysis from the point of view of presentation technology.

Photonics Colloquium

Responsible lecturers: Karsten Buse, Alexander Rohrbach, Hans Zappe
Program summer term 2023

Scientists from all over the world and also from Freiburg will give in-depth insights into their research work in the field of photonics. The speakers are encouraged to convey the basics of their work in an easily understandable way in the first part of their presentations, as in a lecture, in order to then delve deeper into the fascinating world of photonics. Students in higher semesters as well as master's students and doctoral students with a connection to optics can thus gain a head start in knowledge and better grasp what topics are being advanced in this booming field in the world and in Freiburg.

Optical Materials

Lecture + Excercises

Performing lecturer: Ingo Breunig

Optical materials can manipulate light in various ways. This makes them essential for a range of engineering applications, including optoelectronics, communications, sensing, imaging, and laser technology.

In this course, we teach how light interacts with matter and how the structure of matter influences its optical properties. We will cover the most important effects relevant for the abovementioned applications and discuss possibilities and limitations from the material point of view.
